Pitch Report from Darren Ganga: “Kieron Pollard hasn’t given much away regarding his decision [bowling first], I will try to do justice. But it’s interesting to note that despite five of the last nine matches at this venue being won by the team batting first, captains still seem hesitant to do so. This likely stems from a clear shift in bowling tactics we’ve observed recently. In the first four games here, seamers used slower deliveries about 40% of the time. In the next five matches, that jumped to 60%. This tells us the surface is rewarding pace off the ball. Looking at the pitch today, which was last used about six days ago, it has a light brown, dry appearance with very little grass. Expect it to play on the slower side. The average first-innings score this season is 164, and if you’re batting first, you’ll need to capitalize early. However, the most effective strategy seems to be the one we saw from Zahoor Khan in his recent outing against the Abu Dhabi Knight Riders. He was incredibly effective by keeping almost all his deliveries under 100 km/h. Batters need to be ready for these sub-100 variations and find a way to counter the lack of pace. If the Giants can navigate this, they might set a target that secures their survival.”
